There’s a perception that Low Carb High Fat is a rich man’s way of eating and isn’t affordable for most people. Not true! In fact the expensive ingredients like nut flours and sweeteners are not going to speed up the weight loss – Real food will.
As I mentioned last week, the biggest misconception is that large portions of protein are needed and the cuts people choose are not the fatty ones (which are cheaper), but the more muscular ones which are more expensive and not as filling and nutritious. For example, Offal is a wonderfully nutritious source of protein and extremely inexpensive. (Keep following for a delicious recipe using Offal.) Most people who start eating Low Carb may even need to decrease their protein intake as this is a moderate protein way of eating!
Sticking with eating a palm size and width protein, vegetables and healthy fats will result in a lower grocery bill. Especially when you don’t purchase any form of cold drinks or fruit juices, biscuits, chips and sweets/desserts. The bonus is that you will be eating less food and less often and not feel hungry all the time!
A few of my best tips:
– Stick to fresh, seasonal vegetables. Get these from the big markets and share with friends. Blanche them and when cooled they can be kept frozen. Otherwise, buy what you need for the week and keep refrigerated.
– Plant a small vegetable garden with spinach, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, celery and herbs that grow quickly and are relatively easy to maintain.
– Buy cheaper fatty cuts of meat and cook them slowly. Brisket is delicious and way cheaper than rump.
– Tripe, liver, trotters, marrow bones and all other parts of the animal that you may have been reluctant to eat, are loaded with nutrition and way cheaper.
– Make stews with loads of vegetables, a little fatty meat and bone broth and freeze portions to reheat for meals throughout the week.
– Save chicken bones to turn into a bone broth, which will add nutrition and flavor to what ever you cook.
– Buy fat from your butcher – lamb, port or beef. Render it down to make lard or tallow by placing it in a pan in the oven, or heat up in a pot on the stove. The crispy bits you have left will make delicious snacks and the wonderful liquid can be poured into a glass jar as your fat to use for cooking vegetable, meat or frying food in. Very reasonable and a brilliant source of fat!
– Eggs are also an amazing source of protein. They aren’t too pricey and are super nutritional. You can always have eggs with leftover vegetables and eggs are of course the best way to start the day!
– Tinned pilchards in brine are an outstanding source of protein.
– Make your own cream cheese from maas!
– Drink good pure coffee and don’t have too much.
– Cut out all sweeteners as Xylitol is expensive. (It’s a win-win)
Only amazing results in and out of your body can come from these changes, trust us!
